Audubon & Toyota's TogetherGreen Initiative Launches Facebook App to Encourage Conservation

Toyota_logo_2
TogetherGreen, a conservation alliance between the National Audubon Society and Toyota, launched today the Spring Greening Challenge, a Facebook application that offers weekly conservation challenges, data on the impacts of green choices anyone can make around the home, and an opportunity for participants to win prizes.

The Spring Greening Challenge encourages participants to save water, protect habitats, engage people, reduce energy and win prizes! A play on Spring Cleaning, visitors to the application page on Facebook are invited to take that week’s challenge, which is the completion of a particular conservation action around the home, like changing buying habits (e.g. purchasing recycled products). Once the challenge is completed, participants are encouraged to click the “I Did It” button to be entered in weekly and grand prize drawings. The Spring Greening Challenge application will be available through April 23rd offering four different weekly challenges.

This online engagement campaign, which is a component of the larger TogetherGreen program, was designed with a key goal of reaching a broad audience and making participation in meaningful conservation actions accessible to everyone.  To date, TogetherGreen has saved 5.8 million dollars through volunteer support, improved 10,540 acres of wildlife habitat, and engaged 218,311 participants through its grants, fellowships, and volunteer days programs. This online engagement campaign will help broaden the reach of TogetherGreen by offering anyone the opportunity to take important conservation actions around their home.

The online engagement campaign was also designed to educate users. In addition to simply viewing a task, completing it and entering to win prizes, participants will learn about the impact of these actions with surprising conclusions and playful comparisons. For instance, if the application encourages the use of natural cleaning products over conventional chemical-based ones, the user can see how many toxins will be kept out of the environment as a direct result of this choice. The application also features an impact estimator that demonstrates the incremental impact the action could have if the participant encourages all of his or her Facebook friends to also complete this challenge.

The decision to house the application within the TogetherGreen Facebook page was made in part to encourage social media buzz. Participants are invited to engage their friends (Facebook), circles (Google+) and followers (Twitter) within their social media networks to share information, promote the application and participate in challenges.

“These challenges are easy enough that anyone can participate – from the suburbanite in St. Louis to the San Francisco city dweller to the rural ranch owner in Montana – yet impactful enough to make a real difference,” said Elizabeth Sorrell, Digital Media Manager for TogetherGreen at National Audubon Society. “TogetherGreen is all about people-powered conservation and we hope that Spring Greening proves that even small actions add up to large change.”

Prizes for participation include weekly drawings for 25 winners to receive TogetherGreen t-shirts. Three grand prizes of $250, $100 and $50 gift certificates to Lowe’s will be awarded from drawings at the conclusion of the challenge.

Keyla, thank you for this great review and welcome to the Toyota Sunnyvale family

"Before changing to Toyota Sunnyvale we were faithful clients of Toyota Stevens Creek. We changed locations because it is close by to our place and we were not 100% satisfied with the car maintenance services there, so we should have done this earlier.

My husband also hates going shopping for anything, even for a car. So, our plan was getting into the dealership, finding a salesperson and getting things done as fast as we could. We have done our homework before hand so we knew exactly what type of car we wanted, what features, etc.

When we got into Toyota Sunnyvale they were prompt to work with us. The first salesperson came and gave us a brief introduction about the new models of the car we were looking for but we said we have already made up our minds and we wanted to get things done as quick as possible -- do our test drive and close the deal. We also mentioned that we wanted to skip the sales talk and go straight to business.

Well, Zenia Padua was walking by and the sales person who was dealing with us said that in our case Zenia was the best person to help us. Zenia has been a car saleswoman for quite some time, is very straight forward, open and prompt to answer any type of questions and very flexible. She is very knowledgeable and helpful and even if she doesn't know something right away she will dig and find an answer. She has been checking on us since we bought the car and also has helped a few times answering questions and details about extra accessories that we wanted need to buy (like he right tire chains).

I'm very happy with Toyota Sunnyvale and super satisfied with customer care so far. I highly recommend Zenia Padua as a salesperson and if you are looking for a good dealership -- Toyota Sunnyvale is the place."

2012 Toyota Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series Test Drive

2012_toyota_tacoma_photo_2
On Sale Date: May

Price: $32,000–$35,000 (est)

Competitors: Nissan Frontier Pro4-X, Chevrolet Colorado Z71

Powertrain: 4.0-liter V-6, 236 hp; 266 lb-ft (sport mode)

Estimated Fuel Economy (city/highway): 16/21

What's New: Toyota has had a capable and popular TRD off-road package on its Tacoma pickups since 1998. The grouping of parts, developed by the team at Toyota Racing Development (TRD) includes one essential component for slow-speed four-wheeling: a selectable locking rear differential. With it, the TRD package has made the Tacoma a solid four-wheeler. But according to Zach Zwillinger, product development engineer for TRD, Tacoma owners have been yearning for something more extreme. And the company had yet to develop a truck specifically aimed at West Coast Baja racing enthusiasts. "They were asking for a lifted Tacoma," Zwillinger says. But sliding a taller, special-edition pickup truck under the noses of the Toyota executives preoccupied with government safety regulations is a challenging task. Nevertheless in the fall of 2010, TRD began work on the project that would become the 2012 TRD T/X Baja Series.

The Tacoma Baja Series is available only as a V-6 4WD Access Cab or Double Cab short bed, and only in red or black. You can choose between a six-speed manual or the five-speed automatic. It's tempting to describe this truck as Toyota's answer to the Ford Raptor, but that's not quite accurate. The Baja simply isn't that radical—think of this truck largely as a well-executed off-road suspension package.

The Baja Series receives a 1.75-inch lift upfront thanks to TRD springs wrapped around Bilstein shocks. The shocks are based on Bilstein's high-end 9100 Series dampers and use a 60-mm piston (compared with 32 mm for the stock Tacoma 4x4). The new front suspension increases wheel travel from 8 inches to 9.25 inches. It turns out the limiting factor for more suspension movement is the upper ball joint, and finding a better one would have cost too much time and money, according to the team. "We built this system so it could grow with the customer," Zwillinger says. So an owner could, for example, buy a pair of aftermarket upper A-arms that allow even more front-wheel travel, and then have the Bilsteins modified to match. The front bump stops are slightly shorter to allow for the increase in jounce (compression) travel.

In the rear, the TRD team selected the three-leaf (plus one overload leaf) spring pack used in Tacoma towing packages, which provides a 10-mm increase in rear ride height. The damping comes form Bilstein 5160 remote reservoir shocks that have been custom-valved. The team did much of the suspension testing and tuning at the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) in California and had Bilstein's shock-tuning truck on hand to make on-demand adjustments to the valving. "We did at least three or four rebuilds on the rear shocks before we got it correct," says Zwillinger, "but basically we dialed-in the lightest tuning possible that would meet our durability requirements". The rear suspension package increases wheel travel from 8.5 inches to 10 inches—mostly in rebound (droop) travel. And to allow for the increase, the rear brake lines have been lengthened slightly with a bracket.

Aside from the radical graphics package and TRD wheels wrapped with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires, the Tacoma Baja gets a slight bump in power from a TRD cat-back exhaust system. Engineers say the increase is slightly less than 10 hp.

Tech Tidbit:The 3-inch-diameter front coil springs are manufactured by Eibach for TRD. They are off-the-shelf race units rated at 650 lb/in. That's slightly softer than the stock springs.

Driving Character: Lifted pickup trucks tend to ride more harshly than their stock counterparts. The taller springs and higher spring rates, combined with off-road shocks that are way too stiff, make life unpleasant. But the Baja wears such a mild suspension lift and is tuned so well that it's only a bit firmer than stock. In fact, the sport packages offered on cars these days tend to ride rougher than this truck does. You feel a little more road texture in the Baja than you might in a stock truck. But at higher speeds, the Baja's suspension really smooths out the road. And this is true off-road as well.

We drove the Baja up to the Hungry Valley SVRA, about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles, for a day of four-wheeling. Hungry Valley has a mix of slow and high-speed terrain. Early in the day we locked the Baja in low range, engaged the rear locking diff, and walked the truck up a few difficult rutted hill climbs. No doubt the extra wheel travel helped us out on these ascents, but on this type of trail, the rear locker and the aggressive all-terrain tires are the biggest traction aid. On the way down, you simply disengage the locker and let the hill descent control modulate the brakes for you. On higher-speed washboard roads, the Bilsteins really keep the back of the truck from hopping around. It stays planted and feels like it's following the terrain rather than skittering around like most empty pickups do.

In sandy washes, where you need to slide the truck and maintain some wheelspeed, the electronic aids are best left in the off position. The Baja truck soaks up this rough, higher-speed whoops with ease—and much improved over any basic Tacoma. But make no mistake: You are limited in speed, depending on the size of the "whoops" on the trail—an extra inch or so of wheel travel doesn't instantly turn this Tacoma into a Trophy Truck. And we did notice quite a bit of steering wheel movement as the front suspension cycled through its range of motion. Perhaps a steering stabilizer shock would diminish this effect. The Baja package does offer the driver a large safety net when hitting dusty roads and rutted washes. The suspension tuning keeps the tires on the ground. Instead of pogoing the front end as many stock trucks do, you can push the Baja a little harder and it will take the punishment.

Favorite Detail: Factory wheels typically aren't the most attractive designs. Even the Tacoma's lineup of 4x4 wheels are a little boring. But these TRD wheels (in a special finish just for the Baja) work. We even like the simulated beadlock rim, a nod to the real Baja race machines.

Driver's Grievance: As good as the Baja is at handling higher-speed off-road terrain, for low-speed four-wheeling we'd like to see a front locking differential or a limited slip added. Ford recently included this (a Torsen model) in its Raptor. And Toyota could add this feature without affecting the on-road manners of the truck.

The Bottom Line: The Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series is an impressive package, and it adds about $4300 to the price of a TRD Tacoma. Toyota says it will build only 750 of them for the 2012 model year. Why so few? Toyota is essentially capacity constrained. The Baja trucks begin as regular production Tacomas 4x4s that are completed on the assembly line at the San Antonio plant. The trucks are then driven a short distance within the plant complex to Toyota Logistical Services, where a small team turns the production Tacomas into Bajas by hand. It's clear that if the package becomes popular, it will return for 2013. We hear some colors might be added, as well as some unique interior details such as a special doorsill plate or shift knob. Could a more radical package come down the line? Judging by the enthusiasm within TRD, it's certainly a possibility.

Toyota Giving 100 Cars to 100 Nonprofits in 100 Days

Toyota_logo_2
Do you know a nonprofit that could make great things happen with a new car? At 12:00 pm ET/9:00 am PT today (Monday), applications will open for Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good, a major national philanthropy program in which the automaker is giving away 100 cars to 100 nonprofits over the course of 100 days. Winners will be selected each day through public voting on Facebook.

Application materials and complete information on the program are available at www.100carsforgood.com

“At Toyota, we appreciate what a big difference a new car or truck can make for organizations that are doing so much to improve lives and strengthen communities across America,” said Jim Lentz, President and Chief Operating Officer of Toyota Motor Sales. “Over the past 20 years, Toyota has contributed more than half a billion dollars to nonprofits throughout the U.S. 100 Cars for Good allows us to build on that commitment in new ways, putting the public in the ‘driver’s seat’ as we work to help community organizations broaden their impact in neighborhoods nationwide.”

Applying for the 2012 100 Cars for Good Program

  • Registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and non-profit Native American or Alaskan tribes with sovereignty can apply online at www.100carsforgood.com beginning on Monday, March 12. This address will link to the 100 Cars for Good Facebook page.
  • 100 Cars for Good applications will be open for two weeks (until Monday, March 26 at 11:59 am PST]), or until 5,000 applications are received.  From this group, 500 finalists will be selected and certified by an independent panel of experts.  Finalists will be notified in April.
  • Each finalist will then submit a short video and explanation on how a new vehicle would help further its work.  Both will be featured on the 100 Cars for Good site.
  • Public voting on the finalists will begin on Monday, May 14 at www.100carsforgood.com with five organizations up for consideration each day for 100 consecutive days.
  • The four runners up each day will each receive a $1,000 grant from Toyota.
  • Finalists will be eligible for one of six Toyota models, including the Camry Hybrid, Highlander SUV, Prius v hybrid, Sienna minivan, Sienna Mobility or Tundra full-sized pickup.
  • A six-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty will also be provided for each vehicle, compliments of Toyota Financial Services.

Making a Lasting Impact in Communities Nationwide

This is the second consecutive year for Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program.  100 Cars for Good is the first Toyota initiative to engage the public in determining how its corporate philanthropic donations will be awarded.  Vehicles from the first year of the program – which were awarded to nonprofits in 31 states and the District of Columbia – are making a significant difference across the country, including for:
  • The Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown, NJ, which can now pick up donations of food that used to be turned away due to a lack of transportation, allowing it to provide meals and food to even more people in need;
  • Camp Casey, a program near Detroit that provides horseback riding visits for kids with cancer that is now able to expand its reach to families in other parts of the state; and
  • Washington, DC’s Aleethia Foundation, whose new minivan enables it to transport wounded veterans recovering at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to much needed social nights away from the hospital.
Teresa Connolly, Executive Director of New Jersey’s Community Soup Kitchen, which was awarded a Toyota Sienna in last year’s program, commented, “Toyota’s donation was a game changer for us, making it possible to significantly expand our food programs at a time of extraordinary need. This ability to serve more people and to bring greater awareness to our mission simply wouldn’t have happened without Toyota.”
More than Just Cars – Nonprofit  Finalists Build Digital Marketing and Social Media Skills

As part of the 100 Cars for Good program, Toyota will provide every finalist with a digital video camera, training toolkit and free online advertising credits to help them create or expand their presence in social media and other digital platforms. The nonprofit finalists can use these resources for their 100 Cars campaign and can continue to build on them after the program.

Molly Reeser, Executive Director of Detroit’s Camp Casey, one of the 2011 100 Cars recipients,  noted, “In addition to a new truck, Toyota gave us the training and resources we needed to get more sophisticated about social media marketing for the long-term. This has had a real impact, with our ‘likes’ on Facebook jumping five-fold in very short order.”

Euli, we are happy to know you enjoyed the customer service provided by Paul

"Toyota of Sunnyvale has the best internet sales team. I worked with Paul Maloa who truly delivered exceptional customer service. He is patient and is willing to give discounts on sales. I worked with him to buy a Prius. I love their 7 day price guarantee on the car that you want to buy. He also gave me a 7 day price guarantee on the trade in value of my Lexus.
Most importantly, he is willing to do business over the phone. He is very easy to talk to and he doesn't try to confuse you different sets of numbers.
I also visited Stevens Creek Toyota twice and both times they were unwilling to give me a discounted price on a new car and they would not give me a written offer on the trade in of my car. They kept asking me to waste more time by visiting and visiting.

Ask for Paul Maloa when you consider buying your next car. He's more than awesome."

Nicholas, thank you for this five-star review

"I would like to thank both of my sales associates for their patience when buying my Supra out of state. They were not only patient, but they also reserved the car for me. It was a long month working with both sales associates, but in the end everything went smoothly. This was my first time purchasing a vehicle from out of state and everything I asked for was given to me as far as paperwork and pictures. Thanks a bunch."

Vu and Bart, thank you for making Joe's first car buying experience a truly enjoyable one!

"Just came back from buying a used car from Sunnyvale Toyota, couldn't be happier! Vu Nguyen, the salesman, was very helpful and knowledgeable about the vehicle and Finance Mgr. Bart DiCairano was great. Never felt pressured and all my options were laid out and questions answered. Sales people were very friendly, too, making a point of coming out and congratulating me on my purchase before I left the dealership. This was the first time I have ever dealt with a dealership to purchase a vehicle and it was MUCH less painful than I anticipated. Toyota of Sunnyvale will not only get my business for all maintenance on my Durango, as well as any future business when I purchase a car again. Well done, Vu and Bart! Low-cost Yaris more alluring as gas prices climb

2012_toyota_yaris_photo_2

As gas prices creep into the $4 range, the redesigned 2012 Toyota Yaris has become even more appealing than in the past. Admittedly, the three- or five-door lift back won't fulfill the needs of all drivers and their families as far as space is concerned. But if you are looking to eke out more than 30 mpg in city/highway driving, this subcompact is well worth a test drive.

A sole 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine develops just 106 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 103 pounds-feet of torque at 4200 rpm for a pleasant and comfortable drive. Available as a five-speed manual or a four-speed auto transmission, the wheelbase of Toyota's entry-level car has been stretched by 2 inches and the length by 3 inches overall, though the height has been reduced by 0.6 inches.

Unlike its predecessor, the revamped cabin now boasts a robust and flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel. And the previously centered multi-instrument panel is in front of the driver for convenience.

Offered as the basic L, LE and the sporty SE, the Yaris starts at $14,115 and peaks at $17,200, depending on transmission choice. Toyota claims EPA figures of 30/38 mpg for manual and 30/35 mpg for automatic with its 11.1-gallon fuel tank. We earned about 32 mpg in a week's driving on city roads and highway.

Kudos to the carmaker for packing the affordable vehicle with standard safety features such as dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, driver knee airbag, stability and traction control, antilock brakes, side-impact door beams and tire pressure monitoring system.

The agile, roomy and practical Yaris gets the job done reasonably well. And it assures you of tremendous savings at the pump. What more can one ask for in a ride as fuel prices spiral out of control?

Ken, thank you for providing outstanding customer service. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.

"If you purchase a used car from Toyota Sunnyvale, one thing to remember is to ask for the salesman Ken! Believe me, you will not be disappointed! Since purchasing my used car on Saturday 2/25, I have been dealing with ups and downs from Toyota Sunnyvale. I was a very disatisified customer. But Ken worked so hard these past days with his financing department and myself and we were able to get a deal in place. These 5 stars I am giving is for Ken and his general manager, it is because of them I am able to keep my car. I want to thank you for outstanding customer service!"
