The Never-Ending Story of Waste Reduction at Toyota, Part 2

Toyotalogo
"Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America (TEMA) has performed an impressive number of projects to eliminate waste. As part of a discussion of how the company has reduced waste to and beyond zero landfill, Kevin Butt, TEMA general manager and chief environmental officer, offered examples of waste-reduction projects in plants across North America.

Toyota’s Georgetown, Kentucky, plant has the capacity for 525,000 units a year. It has 7,000 employees and seven cafeterias. All of the organic waste from the cafeterias, including the oils and greases, as well as the paper and other waste from the offices, is composted. “We have a five-ton composter on-site,” states Butt. The result is a high-quality compost that is used for landscaping around the plant, in the greenhouse where the (manufacturing) plant grows its own (living) plants for landscaping, and in a six-acre garden where team members grow vegetables. Once the vegetables are harvested, 80% of them are donated to a local food bank that provides food to low-income residents. The other 20% are used in the plant's cafeterias.

The San Antonio, Texas, plant reduced the amount of waste generated from paint sludge. Previously, the sludge had a high water content and was held in a roll-off container prior to being transported and disposed of off-site. Team members came up with a way to replace the existing roll-off container with a dewatering box that uses a filter frame and cloth liner. This allows the water to drain from the sludge at the bottom of the container. Team members then pump the water into a separate container and send it for standard wastewater treatment. The new process reduces the weight of the sludge by 28 percent. In addition, the sludge is now suitable to be recycled as a base material for a local cement company.

The Cambridge, Ontario, plant has achieved the zero-landfill target for the past five years. One of its keys to success has been to maximize the number of waste streams in that plant that can be recycled. Initially, team members categorized all of the waste streams (eg: paper, batteries, sandpaper, oily rags, rubber gloves, etc.), so they could better understand where and how waste was being generated. Once the waste was categorized, the team members determined which streams could be recycled or reused. They then developed a number of tools, such as color-coded waste bins and signs, to improve the segregation of these wastes into appropriate bins. The plant now has 45 different recycling categories.

Toyota's engine plant in Buffalo, West Virginia, generates hundreds of thousands of gallons of coolant wastewater as a result of its processes. In the past, the plant had to send the oily wastewater out in two tanker trucks per day. Now the plant has installed a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to treat the oily wastewater. The system uses bacteria to eat away at the oil in the coolant. The plant is now able to pretreat and discharge the water to a public treatment facility, which allows the water to safely be returned to the environment along with treated wastewater from the rest of the town.

The Buffalo, West Virginia, plant also sends some of its discarded plastics to a local recycling company that supports programs for the disabled. The company turns the waste plastic into flying disks (similar to Frisbees). The Toyota plant then purchases the flying disks to hand out at local community events. It also hands them out to the students of local schools who visit the plant. Then, as part of its educational program, team members provide an explanation of how the recycling process works at the plant, using the flying disks as an example. Some of the other discarded plastics at the plant are sent to a recycling center that uses them to make guardrails for roadways.

When the Huntsville, Alabama, plant needed to shut down an engine production line, instead of viewing all of the materials from the old line as waste that needed to be discarded, team members looked for ways to reuse and recycle as much as possible. For example, they found 30,000 gallons of coolant from the central systems on the old line that, it turned out, was compatible with an existing line in another part of the plant. The team members siphoned the coolant into containers and transported it to the other line.

Toyota's plant in Indiana installed a paper pulper in 2009 to recycle paper products from the cafeteria. In 2010, it expanded the recycling program to paper products from the plant's bathrooms and break rooms. The pulper shreds the paper products and mixes them with water to form a slurry. Most of the water is then removed and reused by the pulper. The pulp is then sold to a paper recycling facility to make paperboard and cardboard boxes. In the past three years, almost 500,000 pounds of paper have gone through the pulper.

Company-wide, TEMA's plants used an immersion (dip) process to apply corrosion inhibitor to the vehicles. In order to cover all of the interior crevices, an excessive amount of corrosion inhibitor was required. Toyota worked with one of its suppliers to develop an electro-deposition process that uses less corrosion inhibitor to achieve same level of coating."

25 More Toyota Cars for Good Winners Announced

Wed, Jul 11 2012 at 8:00 AM EST

The 2012 car giveaway is now halfway over.
25moretoyotaforgoodwinners
"Toyota has announced the second set of 25 winners in the 2012 100 Cars for Good program. The contest gives away one vehicle a day for 100 days. Charities underwent a nomination period earlier this year and each day five of the finalists are featured on the Toyota Facebook page. The public can vote for their favorite charity and at the end of the day, the nonprofit organization with the most votes wins their choice of one of six Toyota vehicles.

This year’s program is just past the halfway mark but the Toyota Sienna is the most popular vehicle yet with 25 organizations choosing the minivan. Toyota has also given away 11 Tundras, 8 Highlanders, 3 Sienna Mobility models, 2 Prius v models and one Toyota Camry.

“With this announcement of the next 25 winners, we mark the half-way point of the 2012 Toyota 100 Cars for Good program,” said Jim Lentz, president and chief executive officer of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “Toyota created the 100 Cars for Good program as a way to give to a variety of organizations across the country and to do so with the help and support of the American public. It’s the public vote that decides which organizations will receive a new Toyota vehicle and we are thrilled to see the outpouring of support for the program with thousands of votes.”

Organizations from a variety of sectors are represented among the first 50 winners including animal welfare and wildlife, health and safety and education. Organizations like Animal Aid, Inc in Oakland Park, Florida are among the winners this year.

Animal Aid, Inc is a no-kill shelter that is “dedicated to the welfare of stray and feral animals and to the reduction in the over population problem through education and spay/neuter efforts.”

Another winning charity this year is DC Scores. The Washington, D.C. based organization provides after-school programs for low-income youth in the city. Amy Nakamoto, DC Scores executive director, explained how the organization would use the new Toyota Sienna minivan during the delivery ceremony.

“Thanks to Toyota's generosity and service to our community, we will be able to provide and transport much-needed soccer and writing equipment to over 40 DC public schools who host a DC SCORES after-school program. This will increase our efficiency in using time, money and people to directly impact hundreds of DC students in the coming years. We are very grateful to be part of such a large and effective philanthropic initiative by Toyota.”

You can get involved in the contest by helping determine which organizations will win each day through August 21, 2012. Simply visit the Toyota Facebook page to cast your vote for your favorite nonprofit organization."

Happy Friday the 13th!

Happy Friday the 13th fans! As we all know, the occurrence of a Friday landing on the 13th of a month is considered an unlucky and ominous day. Some studies suggest that many people even alter their daily routines on these days, including travel habits. We want to hear if you believe in this superstition or not, and if so, how far do you go out of your way to avoid the possibility of danger during this "anti-holiday?"

Toyota Named Top Green Brand

June 28th, 2012 - Joe Duarte

Toyota was singled out for its unparalleled sustainability leadership.

Topgreenbrand
The Prius (now a family of cars including - from left - the sport compact Prius c, Prius Plug-In, minivan-ish Prius v, and the patriarch Prius sedan) is credited with building and maintaining Toyota’s “green” reputation.

"Auto giant tops 49 brands in 13 sectors

Toyota has been named the world’s Best Global Green Brand for 2012 for its leadership in innovation, environmental sustainability and fuel efficiency. It’s the second successive year the automotive giant has held the top spot of all world brands in 13 sectors.

The Best Global Brand Top 50 awards are bestowed by Interbrand, the world’s leading brand consultancy firm (specializing in brand strategy, analytics and valuation, corporate design, digital brand management, packaging design and naming). Also making the list are Honda (3rd overall), Volkswagen (4th), BMW (10th), Ford (15th); Mercedes-Benz (16th), Hyundai (17th) and Nissan (21st).

The rankings were determined by a survey of more than 10,000 respondents in 10 countries to analyze each company’s environmental record and how the company is perceived by consumers.

Toyota was singled out for its unparalleled sustainability leadership. In particular, Interbrand praised the deeply ingrained environmental sustainability in the company culture, which has been a core management priority since the early 1990s.

That dedication to sustainability is credited for keeping the company ahead of the clean vehicle trend and resulting in steady improvements in energy use, water consumption, waste, and toxic emissions year after year. And, it continues to embark on company wide initiatives to improve environmental performance and build on reputation for cutting-edge eco vehicle development through innovation, key partnerships and strategic campaigns.

At the centre of the company’s success, says Interbrand, is the halo effect generated by the success and long-term visibility of Prius, which, in many people’s minds, has become synonymous with the term “hybrid.”

Honda was praised for its green brand visibility in many world markets, including North America, Japan and the U.K. Its manufacturing plants in North America continue to develop methods to diminish waste throughout the product life cycle. The company also publicizes an ecological evaluation of its suppliers and consistently tops lists as the greenest automaker for low emission ratings and nontoxic design measures.

Volkswagen was commended for its substantial environmental investments and goals, leadership in innovation, environmental sustainability and fuel efficient vehicles.

BMW was praised for its “EfficientDynamics” initiative, which applies green thinking to every stage of product development as it strides toward fuel efficiency and emission reductions."

This 5-Star Reviewer Found the Best Price at Toyota Sunnyvale!

Edmunds_logo
"I recently bought a fully loaded '12 Camry Hybrid XLE from Toyota Sunnyvale. I went to them because they were one of three dealerships recommended by Consumer Reports' subscription buying service. I had not intended to buy a fully loaded model, but discovered that I pretty much had to in order to get the options we really wanted -- leather seats and moon roof. They made it easy for us, opening with an offer of $32,236 -- $2,570 below MSRP. They came in under the best price I'd calculated on my own spreadsheet and below what Consumers called a "great" price; also below Edmunds' True Market Value. Their open was good enough to close the deal for me; no haggling required. Their direct sales manager, Matt Wong, was very helpful, as was Paul, our salesman. My only complaint is that the car came equipped with cruddy Bridgestone tires; I asked them to change them out for Michelins, but they said they didn't have any. So I had to immediately replace the Bridgestones with "after-market" Michelins -- a small price to pay for the deal we got."
