Revamped Toyota Yaris gains a few inches, finesse
[[posterous-content:pid___0]]
Time was, econoboxes were just that: bare-bones vehicles with tiny doors, cheap plastic interior bits, limited safety features and putt-putt engines.
Today it’s a new game, with carmakers -- both domestic and foreign -- rapidly upping the ante as technology trickles down from luxury models.
The Toyota Yaris, which was new for 2007, marks its second generation this year. The sedan is gone, leaving three- and five-door hatchbacks, starting at $14,875 and $16,740, respectively. That’s not the least expensive hatch (Kia Rio gets that honor), but it’s ballpark for the genre.
The new Yaris is about 3 inches longer than its predecessor and a little taller. Cargo space benefits, as does headroom.
The 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine carries over for now, but fuel efficiency has improved along with the driving experience.
Base price includes the 5-speed manual transmission, but the $725 4-speed automatic is new.
That, coupled with an improved suspension, gives the Yaris some spunk. You can have fun zipping around corners and down the highway with confidence. Starting at about 17 grand for a five-door manual, the SE model takes that up a notch and has a sportier look.
Fuel economy barely edges up with the automatic, to 30 miles per gallon in the city and 35 on the highway, from 29/35. Manual models, however, jump to 33/38 from 29/36. Still, that lags some competitors such as Chevrolet Sonic, Hyundai Accent and Ford Fiesta, which can hit the 40 mark.
Cargo room is noticeably larger than in the previous generation -- but, as with all compact hatchbacks, it is limited. Rear seats fold down easily for added space, but the base model does not have the 60-40 split. Legroom isn’t bad in back.
The Yaris gets kudos for its nice-looking interior. Sure, you’ll find lots of plastic and cloth, but the designers used interesting grains and patterns to give it a quality appearance.
The lineup of standard safety equipment also is excellent. There are nine airbags: front, front side, rollover side in front and rear, and a knee bag for the driver. All Yaris models also come with traction and stability control, and antilock brakes with assist and sudden-stop features.
Toyota also is trying something different with a single front windshield wiper, saying it is lighter and more efficient. Big surprise, no rain the week I had the car in Phoenix, so I didn’t get to test that theory.
Standards on the base L model include halogen headlamps, rear defogger and wiper, air conditioning, USB port with iPod connection, cargo cover, and sound system with AM/FM, CD player and MP3 playback.
Upgrading to the LE’s additional content adds $1,365 to the tab.
I have always held on to my cars until they gave out, but I’m not sure that’s the way to go anymore. If your car is 10 years old, you’re missing out on key technology and features, even in budget-minded cars like the Yaris.

We would like to thank this customer for this great review
"I actually bought my new minivan here despite the bad reviews. I got a really great deal for the new car and also my trade in. Maybe I went there at the right time? I followed the book by going there the last day of the month for the best deals. I got a new sales guy who was not pushy at all. When we couldn't come to an agreement, the sales manager came and gave us a better deal, which was not a surprise to me. However, they were not pushy, respectful, and working hard to earn my business. So far, the experience has been great. I will let you know if my opinion changes after I get my car serviced there."

Toyota Sunnyvale Appreciates its Amazing Customers

The Toyota Yaris has been redesigned for 2012
The Yaris has been redesigned in 2012, and even though it’s a hatchback in the economy range, it’s worth it for any car buyer to take a look.
Longer by almost three inches with the 2012 redesign, making its competition the Hyundai Accent, Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and the Nissan Versa.
There are three trims to consider when choosing the 2012 Toyota Yaris in the two or the four-door hatchback with L or LE for either choice. There is also the sportier SE trim offered on the four-door.
On the L trim you get 15-inch steel wheels, an intermittent front windshield wiper and a rear windshield wiper, power door locks, four-way-adjustable front seats, a tilt steering wheel, and a fold-down rear bench seat.
On the LE trim there are power windows, remote keyless entry, a six-way-adjustable driver seat, auxiliary steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and 60/40-split fold-down rear seat. Only on the LE do you get cruise control too. For the sportier SE trim you can add a sport-tuned suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels, performance tires, four-wheel disc brakes, fog lamps, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and an upgraded upholstery.
With front-wheel-drive, the 2012 Yaris has a 1.5-liter inline-4 engine with 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. You get a five-speed manual transmission or an option to that is a four-speed automatic.
For safety the Yaris has antilock brakes with rear drums on all but the SE trim. The SE trim features four-wheel discs. There is also traction and stability control, front head restraints, front seat side airbags, and front and rear side-curtain and driver knee airbags.
The interior of the 2012 Toyota Yaris is a success story too with a simple design inside, but seats are comfortable and well thought out. The layout is uncomplicated making everything easy to find, and the interior offers a fresh feel to it. The backseat has enough leg room for passengers to sit comfortably as well, not that common in economy cars these days.
For traveling, the Yaris is also not a bad choice with luggage space in the rear that offers a good amount of room. In the four-door there is 15.6 cubic-feet for hauling.
A comfortable drive and definitely firm on the road, you will feel stable while driving the Yaris. For a fresh, eco-minded choice with great handling and a snazzy attitude on the road, check this one out for your next car.
Should You Need to Know: The 2012 redesign has given the 2012 Toyota Yaris an entirely new audience who can appreciate what it has to offer.
Miles Per Gallon: In the city, the Yaris I drove came in at 30 miles per gallon and on the highway at 38 miles per gallon, making driving a pleasure again.
Cost: I drove the SE liftback with a price tag of $17,340.

Troy and Sohail, thank you for your hard work and dedication.
"I helped my mother purchase a new car there recently and they were very friendly and patient with us including their manager Sohail and the sales guy Troy. They even let us return the car after a few days and upgrade to the next model. They were very clear upfront about the price and made sure all our questions were asked. I would definitely buy there again."

Dixie, we are happy to have provided you with an outstanding car buying experience. Thank you for your recommendation.
"My sales person was very knowledgeable and courteous. She answered all my questions concerning the vehicle I purchased and even allowed me to test drive another Toyota that I was considering purchasing. It was so refreshing in today's economy that the sales person didn't pressure me into a quick sale. Toyota Sunnyvale is probably the best place that I have ever purchased a vehicle. They gave me a great price on my trade in and even gave me a higher price than originally offered when I just asked for more money. They didn't play any games with me such as hiding my keys that other dealerships have tried in the past. Toyota Sunnyvale also offered a wide range of extended warranties and she explained all the options available to me while giving me a plan that best suited my personal situation. In summary I give both Toyota Sunnyvale and my sales person the highest recommendation and I will certainly return there to buy my next vehicle a few years down the road."
